okay so those and we're recording a small group right now which is better in my opinion and more purse thank you for hopping on and taking time to world financial aid is complex but let me start at the beginning so mr. Benson I will tell you where in the financial aid office at a college so he brings with him a lot of education course in the senior counselors to see those of you who are here tonight mr. Benson so if you are lost we get it and this can be a confusing world I would suggest you guys paper pencil by you so that you can take some notes now this presentation will live on the Big Bear High School website site starting tomorrow so if you don't you can reference it later on so really this slide is for parents and I would love to take the actually got this letter from there so you can see the letter school is really great I'm making lots of friends and studying very hard with all my stuff love to hear from you what is the sun really this is an expensive Prospect College manageable depending on how you feel and so as long as you go into this March and inform your going to be able to get where you want to go where's the parents room I especially love of knowledge is a noble task and you can never study of word how to live on rice and beans and just make stuff work when you're in college that where there is a will there is a way eligibility for financial aid and how that occurs going to source is totally free what you do and what work-study might look like we're going to go through the application process and we're particularly you guys were going to see a video just a second here is the most important tool and getting free money for college go to a JC or trade school or a four-year University is where everything starts and that window of applying for the FAFSA just opened October 2nd I believe so you guys are right on top of it so your timing is perfect Ed and roll that video you want to go to college or career school maybe you started saving early maybe you'll discover some very treasure but more likely if you'll need another plan so if paying for college is going to fall on your vacations office of federal student aid is the best place to turn for assistance I bet you didn't know that we're the largest provider of Grants loans and work-study funds all of which are easy to apply for and when it is time to apply for Aid head to your favorite free application for federal student aid or FAFSA each October a new FAFSA is available for the next school year in completing it is free when you go to the official website salsa. Gov if you get a grant of work-study job congrats you won't have to pay the money back however Federal Loan is borrowed money and you'll need the promise to repay it remember to borrow only what you need because of federal student loan is a real loan just like with a car or home loan do you understand what you're agreeing to financial aid in the prospect of an instant noodle diet can be a little overwhelming you'll be putting yourself on the path to success and you take the time to plan out your options and let the office of federal student aid help you along the way if you have questions or need more information please DACA so what I'm hoping you wrote down was is free the one that started a racket is still out there that, I believe it is I've not heard a lot lately about it but I believe it still does exist yeah okay so we want to differentiate between that's the good one, which actually charges you money so that's the first thing is be aware you should be on the free site can move on what we want you guys to understand is that the government has unlimited funds which it doesn't just give money to everybody and you could all go to college for free especially in the times were in right now so is if you look at the left side of the slide the parents and students have the responsibility to pay for higher education expenses so if you are from a family where you have two parents who work outside the home money then somebody single parent family and their parents making minimum wage on the other side parents responsibilities after the student has left the house so the the other part of this guy's is that in past years we've had a chance to try and play the game of like Johnny I don't know Johnny is not my responsibility is your son he's your responsibility until he's 24 so from from the sterile perspective now what you think you can isn't always the same amount of money and we understand that and that's why we are acquainting you with all of this so that you know everywhere to look to get if possible for school is junior colleges tuition is just paying for your classes you can see that it's about $1,500 a year at the most junior colleges generally don't have so we estimated that your room and board could cost anywhere from $4,400 to $11,000 which brings the total cost to anywhere from 11,000 to $18,000 a year is like a lot but if you just focus $1,500 if you're still living at home in your classes pretty much you're going to pay some for books but it's nothing compared to the biggest cost in any of these is room and board so if you're in or live with a relative or friend whose near University this is a huge money savings measure their tuition is 14 time 14000 ask for your classes and you can see the amount there that brings your total to about 34,000 to 36,000 we have kids to go to you see if you don't pay anywhere close to that cuz they're getting a lot of free money for college it doesn't mean I should say you're still you're still going to be something most likely and the question is how do we make that as little as possible and that's what mr. Benson is going to get into csu's you can see their less expensive than the UCS and then privates are the biggest ticket item but what does slide doesn't show you is that private school scholarship about 70% 85% of their students so both my son and daughter went to private college and they got about 50% of their entire cost scholarship because of their SAT scores in the grades and we were in a family who looks like we needed a lot of money they had two working parents who made a decent amount of money so you can stay get money even if you're from that Lie by showing Merit and I think we're going to get into that just a minute okay mr. d are you taking it at this house okay so first of all you a thank you all for joining us tonight and this is certainly the hottest financial aid night we have ever done that house we will be informative and and it is a lot of information so I'll try to balance between not boring everyone to death but also going into enough detail so if we answer some questions for you guys and I wanted to kind of start off with these couple sides are on just some basic terms that you're going to hear as we go throughout and so couple of the biggies are give me your cost of attendance and then I'll show you seeing something that you have see or hear thrown around quite a bit so cost of attendance basically as you'll see written there I don't I'm not going to read through all of these but basically every college is going to have its own budget or cost of attendance and it's include all those things that you see some of which Miss shower already touched on a number of those were not included in their books and supplies and extra fees Transportation you know so lot of different things that's what were build Decks cost of attendance their starting point for where they determine your Aid and then the one that you're here at Irma you'll hear a lot is expected family contribution are your EFC and that is a completely theoretical number say and I want to be very clear with that that basically when you file the FAFSA which again will get into what the heck even the FAFSA is ask a lot of financial information and it spits out this magic number called the ESC and the reason that's important is that's what all colleges will use to determine your eligibility based on comparing not UFC first one first one on there the cost of attendance and I'll show you kind of how that works but again remember it's completely theoretical so you could have a $10,000 EFC and end up at college hey having to pay 15 or 20 thousand you may only have to pay two thousand and so even though the EFC doesn't change your out-of-pocket expense could be significantly different just based cost of attendance at the schools Serta breakdown cost of attendance a little more basically they're looking at tuition and fees again you saw the big range between the different schools from a community college all the way up to a private university drains their room the board is more less going to be about the same here either living at home and it's going to cost pretty minimal or you're going to live on campus or maybe in an apartment and again those are going to rain a little bit based on what party I'm sure you're living in but from school sport won't be different books and supplies huge range there Transportation really that be you know if you're going to school Cal State San Bernardino those cost for a year going to be pretty minimal compared to a you go attend Boston College you know those the flying across the country is going to be much more expensive and then miscellaneous personal expenses for me be pretty minimal form a shower pretty expensive building a lot there study abroad expenses potentially a variety of things definition of need so Jen breaking down what they the financial aid offices are going to primarily look at they're going to take that cost tenants that they themselves thus the colleges have established their going to subtract out that EFC that is a result of your file filing FAFSA and that number that Financial need is basically their target they're going to try to meet that Financial need as much as possible in some cases they exceed it and that's a beautiful thing in some cases they come up short and they can't help you as much as on it says you need help and so again school school it's going to vary quite a bit but again just so you know some of these definitions as we move forward calculating eligibility so I can I hit on some of this already Federal EFC it's going to be the exact same at all school so you file the FAFSA you send the results to any of the schools you're applying to they're going to have the exact same information Yes Man shower I was just going to say results true yes no that's a good point basically you will determine know when you file the FAFSA where you're going to have it sent and it all gets sent electronically so good for an ulcer those are going to use what they call Institute institutional methodology so basically they're going to determine in addition to what the federal government is saying they may come up with their own kind of approach to it and then your federal financial aid eligibility berries simply because Federal budgets vary from year to year I'm so there may be on certain type of funds that are available one year and maybe not the next or vice versa and then this is just kind of visual if you will come find the different schools and so if you can see on the screen the blue is your EFC so noticed that thing doesn't change at all depending on what schools you send the information to the cost of attendance the red varies a lot again too wet in the shower was catching on so a community college on the left hand side there let's just guess it's kind of what 12000 and then all the way up to a private school that's closer to $50,000 so even though this is where you'll hear me shower and I talked about all the time don't necessarily throw out a private school off of your list because if you notice their target and what they're going to try to come up with and help you out with is the green that's your need and so even though a private university make OST 50,000 they're trying to come up with 45 of that and in some cases they're able to help you out and get there and again sometimes they're not but don't just throw a private school off the list on just because of that so the role of the financial aid office basically what they're what is is to determine your final eligibility said they again we looked at the cost of attendance and and you're financially I'm in there going to package the aid and it's all based on federal guidelines that are given and and Southern so much they can do is a school but there is some wiggle room there and then once they've done that they will send out your award letter and it details or should anyway the school year ESC again not expected musician what your need is and then they break down what types of Aid and how much you qualify for and then of course in this is at the last bullet here is very important and I think this year especially I working with visuals with special circumstances and I'll get into this a little bit later to but it's something called professional judgment and every financial aid office has the opportunity to use professional judgment and it could look at Scituate like you know before this whole pandemic parents let's say two parents are working both have great jobs making good money all the sudden this hits and they both or one of them loses a job is now on unemployment obviously your financial picture changes drastically and so what you file on the FAFSA is going to show the two jobs making good money when your current situation is not that and so a financial aid office that's the spot excuse me where you would go and talk to them about those so that they can use professional judgment and potentially adjusted appropriately so financial aid just to kind of break it down you got your gift and that's the good stuff that your grants and scholarships well I'd say historically those are need-based so they're going to look at your need and they're going to potentially give you funding to try to basically entice you to come to their school scholarships are going to be merit-based typically So based on grades kind of what Michelle reference with her weather maybe you are in the marching band marching band or your in drama and theater in are there different types of scholarship that could be given to you based on Merit then there's what's called a self-help Aid so this is money that allows you to pay for your expenses at college and can be a very valuable tool but in the in the case of lung and you saw on that little video blur it's money you have to repay but it's an investment in your future it's an investment in your schooling so you can go get a job work study I'm not going to spend a lot of time on that but it gets a little funky there I would say we will get more detailed once you get actual science Play packages basically it's an opportunity to work on campus and earn some extra money they don't necessarily put it straight towards tuition cost and so that's why you kind of have to be careful on the a lot of people Bank on that once they see it on their financial aid award but it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to help pay your expenses lot of time students will get that and just use it for their own personal expenses so, the big picture sources of AIDS or where can it come from and I'll never break each one of these down a little bit so there's four areas basically that this can come from the federal government that's the biggest source of any financial aid the state Orange California that would be the most prevalent is something called the Cal grant I'll talk about that it could money could come from the institution itself so the colleges you're applying to they may fund their own money out of pocket to help you go there or you get money through private scholarships mostly is where that would come from and again will break each of these down just a little federal government real quick as we mentioned is the single largest source of funding for education and really that's done through filing this magic form called the FAFSA free application for federal student aid and again I already kind of mentioned most of what's in that little bear so breaking down the specific the specific types of a that come through the federal government you you got that sell tell paid that I mention so you got the Stafford Loan now I think they've gotten rid of the name Stafford they just call it Direct loan subsidized and unsubsidized and you'll learn maybe in mr. Clark's business math class the difference between those but basically subsidized you don't pay interest while you're in school unsubsidized you have to pay that interest portion not on the loan itself but the interest and then the federal government has also the Perkins loan which is fixed 5% loan and I can be a good one but that's discretionary funds and often schools sometimes they have that sometimes it don't ask the parent loan so the parents can borrow and help pay for that through filing the FAFSA now the difference is the plus loan which would be in the parents name is credit-based the to mention before if the student qualify for Stafford or and or Perkins it's not credit-based obviously most of them are 18 19 20 years old and I have credit so but the plus loan for is and then I mention the federal work-study the opportunity to kind of work on campus and earn a few extra bucks so I'm not the one more positive free stuff the biggest one that you'll hear about through five on the FAFSA is the Pell Grant that's it I need Grant typically with efc's lower than about 50 650-700 I think it is not is you also have What's called the seog and that that money is also discretionary so some schools will have it some well then you got the teach Grant if you're looking at going into education as a potential and then the Iraq and Afghanistan service Grant and you can we can explore these little bit later I don't want to go into great detail about each of these two there are several opportunities through the federal government are both from the self outside and then also the gifted side to help pay for your your college so Shifty number to the state side you guys wall graduate from big high school and the eligible potentially for the Cal grant that's based on a couple of factors it's based on grades and then also family income and family size and they look at a lot of different factors for the seniors this year we upload your GPA to them already and October 1st was the deadline for that so they should have that and begin process in it but you have to file the FAFSA or the DREAM Act application which will get into that as well a minute I'm in order to potentially qualify for the Cal grant and then the middle class scholarship so that's based on certain income which is kind of in its name and I forget the limits that I want to say it again it's based on family size 2 and then you got the Cal State and UC systems which allows do they stay in California and gold there's no gas to fill out you either automatically by 5 they will determine if you automatically qualify for those are in essence those are paying for your respective fees the system-wide fees and then the chafee grant which is an no we've had increasing number of foster youth Sony Foster youth you can get up to $5,000 through this chafee grant again through filing the FAFSA and and having your GPA uploaded for the Cal grant which we already took care of for you or will your senior year if you're not seniors yes Michelle if you go to school in California so if you do Idaho or Montana or wherever and you've got it so that sometimes helps decide where are they going to school the perfect thank you for mentioning that cuz that that is a question often for sure so okay so the a b and c Cal grant Moser used for types of things not going to break those down for you right now but I just know that you could get any of of a few of those times and again they they apply to four year colleges community colleges in eastern Packer trade schools so i n often the common misunderstanding is or they're like I'm going to go to a trade school so I'm not going to worry about doing any child ran out of the FAFSA These funds most of these funds to those schools as well so I'll make sure complete all of that and then we just gave you the website so you can track it this is really for seniors so you can track that information as as it goes really don't need to do much until probably the end of the calendar year maybe once January February to start looking at this stuff all right so shifting so we've done federal state now institutionalized so institutions meaning the colleges and universities and again I kind of hit on a few of the soda machine but lots of different opportunities for Grants and scholarships could be again merit-based could be need-based you may see things show up on your on your financial aid award you know the Bulldog Grants or whatever and its what you're going to label it all sorts of different things but basically it's out of their own pocket in a way enticing you to attend they're trying to make it affordable enough so that you'd be interested in attending their school and in so that second bullet point definitely Enquirer once you've kind of narrow down what what schools are looking at are you want to inquire about their specific programs that are available some schools have a lot some schools minimal so I'm making very quite a bit Square Decatur's so you know we're not millionaires yet I went to private college so please don't roll those out cuz they can be a great option for you I appreciate that and also as mr. mention I worked at to private schools and really I saw a lot of families and it was great to see a lot of families that you wouldn't normally think that they're you know they're not going to pay that much cash out of not many people can and and so there were a lot of different opportunities to help make it a very affordable option so all right from the privates this really we in they're pretty darn fortunate for a little small town we have some amazing organizations and proves that I'm fund a lot of scholarships just for Big Bear high school graduates you can always go on to some of those websites that we list turn on the right and go look for some not not to say that you can't get those but you're competing against on those scholarships with everyone else in the country and in part it's a numbers game and so probably one of your best options scholarships my pump through the tooth a couple different organizations here so you'll hear more about this your senior usually Springtime us a March so this year in the shower will be out to share this information with the seniors and I give you the whole application process and what that looks like but they're just to give you an ID each of those of a local scholarship program so not to confuse you with all this but local scholarship program can be a variety of different organizations but between that program and then the Halo they each gave out right around an annual it's pretty consistent about $100,000 in scholarships each year and again that's just to Big Bear high school students so it's pretty phenomenal and again we go over all of that in the springtime of your senior year shifting gears a little bit so we talked about the the federal money we talked about State money institutional money private money now here's another opportunity and we've had quite a few students take advantage of this not super but it's a great program is called the Western undergraduate exchange and so basically as you can read that paragraph there you'd be going to an out-of-state school for about 50% of the in-state tuition so if you're not already familiar as soon as you go out of California the schools because you're from out of state they will charge you more and and we in California do the same so students come from charge them more than if you're from California that does not apply to private universities as a side note the same cost for anyone wherever despite what state you're from but is basically all the western states and they operate together and basically if you so let's say you wanted to go to Arizona State University in Tempe let's say in state if you were if a student was from Phoenix it's going to cost them $5,000 to attend for a year if you're from Florida or California they're going to charge you $15,000 to go there but if you are from California you go through this with we program basically you'd be charged 150% of that five thousand and so again I'm totally making up numbers I have no idea actually how much that cost at Arizona State but about let's say $7,500 through the program versus the 15 grand and said I can be a great way to go to an out-of-state school if that's an interest of yours save a lot of money you're not going to you know pay the in-state stuff but it says substantial savings and we've had quite a few students do that so I'm asked about that if you have questions on it and I can walk you through that process I should have said we should ask if you do have questions holler away out us or you can put in the shop to undocumented students got a couple sides on this and this goes back several years now but the 8540 so it's assembly Bill 540 basically authorizes in-state tuition on Freddy undocumented students and that also is the California Dream Act the also allow them not only to pay in-state tuition but undocumented students to receive state funding and potentially institutional Aid that we talked about now that the third one third bullet there does not Grant any federal aid and so any of the FAFSA would not be an option and you can see us if you have specific questions on that we can help you walk through that process as well I'm them different so and I will talk about tomorrow I'm just a second so continue until maybe 5:40 I already mentioned qualifying for in-state tuition not be at the UC system Cal State system and Cal and the community college has any of the hundred and thirteen community colleges that we have I basically you have to have completed three years of High School in California and then also graduate which you would if you graduate from here from a California high school to receive that and you can talk to the specific College admissions office as your neck different schools will make this available online so you can just click on that and and check that out if you have some additional questions they're continuing on that vein here is the California Dream act so just some history there a little bit back in 2011 already mentioned kind of what that does Cal grant another state aid the Board of Governors I didn't change that is now called the free college grant College promise Grant it's new but it's the same idea basically covers the Community College yeah I love that is the same sell the Big E now that bottom bullet point is the California Dream Act application and so it is in essence if you were to hop online and and look at that and compare it to the FAFSA is based the same thing they are going to ask the virtually the same questions that a FAFSA does but it is specific to California and so if you fit in this category again shower or me and we can guy G A hopefully in the right direction we may not know all the answers but we'll we'll get you a pointed in the right direction and in a lot of the answers can come through talking to the individual colleges themselves there very good at all of this but that is done through sesac which is California Student Aid Commission so there's the link to that all right so shifting gears back the fast I know this is a lot of info and he has been very patient I'll try to tackle a few more things here but because the fast is such a big piece in this whole financial aid Adventure on some of the things that you want to have the fast that we put a few bullets there they call it the prior pretty not a mistake it is called the tax information and so for seniors this year you would be filing the 2019 parents I guess but mostly parents is 19 tax information and most of it now is just upload it automatically but not a bad idea to have those handy so that you can list accurate information on the FAFSA records of any untaxed income most commonly untaxed that's going to be like child support paid child support received those types of things bank statements you not going to submit any bank statements but you are going to be asked information about that and also if you want a business that's going to be that's going to come into play in the in the facet self likewise any stocks bonds Investments etcetera all right cell review the mentioned earlier and it is a real thing fafsa.com they will charge you quite a bit of money and it's a legit business it's kind of sketchy but it is a legitimate business they will charge you to fill out information at fafsa.com and then they probably turn around and go hop on fafsa.gov and enter it for you and they charge you for that so fast. Gov is where to go the first  and FAFSA free free application for federal student aid the complete one FAFSA for all schools that you're applying to and so you can submit them up to you I'm up to 14 Schools I think at this point I'll be can always add more if needed and and then dependency status this is usually a big he is well specially in will get into some of these questions if needed late they talked about young students that because we have an increasing number of students that maybe live with guardians or grandparents or something like that and so we can get into I said some specifics find school cuz that's an easy one and then the Big E also is applying for your FSA ID basically that's your signature because you're doing it online they're going to require a lot of information to input both and and very important that second to last bullet point student and a parent it doesn't matter which parent but both will need to apply for an FSA ID for that signature and also very very important that bondable appoint that says names must must match your social security number or social security card a we have that happen all the time try to get submitted try to get the FSA ID and it's maybe you go by a different last name or something and so very very important that you matched those up when you fill out the FAFSA to be asked several questions that will determine whether you are an independent or dependent student important distinction because if you are a dependent student and you need to include your parents financial information on your FAFSA this means that your parents financial information will be considered along with your information to determine your eligibility for federal how do you figure out if you're an independent or dependent student sound what is the FAFSA tells me I'm a dependent student but my parents don't claim me on their taxes or have moved are Houston and financially independent while these situations do arise they aren't part of the criteria for independent status on the FAFSA so you would still be required to report your parents financial information on the FAFSA considered a dependent student but have no contact with my parents are access to their information there are other options available to you in these situations so it is possible for independent student submit the FAFSA without parental information you have indicated on your FAFSA that you cannot contact your parents or access their financial information you'll need to speak to staff at the financial aid office at the college or Career School you plan to attend financial aid staff will tell you what to do next what is my parents are going to help me pay for college refuse to provide information for my FAFSA if this is the case the only federal aid you may be able to receive will be an unsubsidized loan which is a federal student loan that begins accruing interest soon as you receive your thoughts to find out whether you can get the loan chill out your FAFSA and then speak to the financial aid staff at the college or career school that you wish to attend if you have any other questions regarding financial aid for college or Career School be able to answer them for you and if appropriate make a decision about your dependency status their decision is final and cannot be appealed to the US Department of Education no matter your dependency status make sure to complete the FAFSA what federal money you can get for college or career you have questions or need more information please visit studentaid.gov okay sorry about that if we lost some sound on there may have been because I muted myself I don't know once we are okay there okay move on so some just a few FAFSA filing tips at one is check for accuracy it sounds oh yes Michelle hour information might have looked will look better for the 2020 year if they lost and that sort of thing so their 2019 taxes might show they made more money than they're about to make in 2020 can you address how students go about letting colleges know that it was 2019 figures don't rappers what's real right now for them yeah absolutely so I think we hit on that in a little bit however I think we talked briefly earlier about this year could be very different compared to what you're at taxes actually showed what they're asking on the FAFSA and said that's where like that little video clip she mentioned individual financial aid office you're going to need to talk to you and it's entirely possible because schools will again use what they call Professional judgment and but it's entirely possible you appeal to four different schools and the Ford can schools come up with different outcomes and that's totally up to them to decide and so don't totally be surprised by that but if it's a clean easy one in the turn in terms of you know I went from making $50,000 a year to now I'm making unemployment because I lost my job with covid-19. Then it's pretty straightforward most schools will appeal that make a professional judgment and change that take your financial picture and make it more accurate for what it is so yeah it's a game Batman shower thank you because this year could arguably be one of the more common problems that we see unfortunately so financial aid offices okay so use the FSA ID to file with your financial aid information cuz it's definitely likely you're going to be asked a lot of the same information over and over again and then you'll notice in your head there are you can start filing the FAFSA already and it is more or less on March 2nd I say more or less because some schools have different priority deadlines but anytime in the next few months I would suggest get that thing go can get you at least your FSA ID set work out any chance that might pop up with social security number whatever and and then it's at the bottom there you'll see your school your school from this point from that point once you file the FAFSA is not big high school so when they're talking about your institution I'm it's going to be the schools that you're applying to and sending that fast information to so just a quick life cycle to see what the heck happens when you file the FAFSA so it starts at the top you it goes on to the central processing system are Department of Education and they simply process it so that education makes no decisions on your financial aid they simply process the information that you submit on the FAFSA and then they disseminate that out to school a b c and d and then they send you a copy as well so it spits out that information once those schools A B C and D from the CPS you will receive a financial aid award letter so that's just kind of a life cycle of what happens with the FAFSA and here's just a sample of the what a financial aid award letter might look like in the detail this is one from University of Portland that kind of detail information they break down cost a break down what and you notice in the gifted the bones the outside work option which is the works today and they die tell it both for both semesters and then really I I personally like to just go straight to the totals cuz it's it's one thing to look at the semester but bottom line is you're going for the for the totals you get your financial aid award letters for multiple schools which happens typically you're going to see those in I'm going to go with April maybe March and April and then you can once you have multiple award letter Stark apples and apples and see what school is going to be the best fit the most financially doable Etc and there are resources in and I'll show you we have a link later that where you can evaluate your financial aid offers and and please put on paper or plugging some of the numbers and comparing and determine your net cost and and see if I can mention which ones can be the best fit so I give you a link here in a little bit later that you can check that out price of couple things in addition we're almost there people in addition to the FAFSA some schools will provide provide require additional documentation one, no one is called the CSS so you're going to have to say hey this thing called CSS profile or they may just ask for additional documents to verify certain things and that second bullet point kind of talks about that the process called verification and basically the verification process don't take it too personally about 50% of all facets get automatically flagged for verification that means is you input the information in the computer and you send it away the college will get the information and right off the bat they're going to say you're flagged for verification so I want to get documents like your tax returns your biz stop your whatever they want and they're going to compare that with what you put into the FAFSA originally and and so that's why we mentioned do it as accurately as possible from the get-go so that through the process if you have to do that everything is pretty smooth and then finally that professional judgment that we already talked about could be a biggie for a lot of people and and and so again professional judgment any of those decisions Asian all of that is done with the individual schools so if you are legitimately applying to an interested in 5 schools you're going to have to go through that process with all five separately it's not you don't get it just you one blanket verification or professional judgment you got to submit that information to each individual School questions for that 1-800 forfeited you actually get live people on that so it's kind of nice I would suggest earlier than later though cuz like many of these things you know as you get closer to deadlines the busier it gets in and it's tougher to actually get someone but they are great they're very knowledgeable and can help you guide you through any kind of stick your funky type of situation be notified so they can begin their process of awarding the great thing about filling out the FAFSA on check is processing status immediately this comes in handy when you're thinking I wonder if it went through within a few days of filling out the FAFSA you'll get your student aid report for Star again you're sorry is your student aid report basically it summarizes all the information you submitted on the FAFSA you can access your Star online FSA FSA using your FSA ID username and password for any mistakes then they Corrections if you need to but only if you estimated your tax information or provide it incorrect information the day you filled out the FAFSA on your SAR you'll see reference to your ESC expected family contribution this number is used to determine your eligibility for federal student aid it doesn't mean you actually have to contribute that amount the financial aid office at each college career School you list on your FAFSA will receive your information each office will then use your FAFSA information to determine how much a you can get at that school it's possible that your college or Career School may require you to verify the information you submitted on your FAFSA if that happens your school will tell you what you need to do once you're accepted into a college or career school you'll get an award letter from the school's financial aid office that explains the aid being offered to you we recommend comparing award letters from multiple school that way you can make the best decision for your situation if you have any questions about your financial aid offer contact the schools financial aid office if your Aid offer includes the Federal Loan and you're a first-time borrower there are a few more steps before you get your loan you need to complete entrance Counseling in sign the master promissory note or npn which is your agreement to pay back the loan your school provide you with the necessary information so how do you get your money well usually grants and Loans will be applied to tuition fees and other charges on your student account first then any leftover money is paid to you work study funds are earned throughout the chart remember filling out the FAFSA is not a one-time thing you must complete it every year you attend school if you have questions and need more information please visit studentaid.gov so they were pretty much there everyone that we we listed obviously the fastest biggie award letter comparison site a lot of different ones out there this is just one we put on there I'm through college board that's pretty nice to be able to compare different award letters when you get those federal student aid. Gov again very useful website and then specifically I went on to that because we've talked a lot about the or some anyway about the promise Grant and different things through community colleges and this that little link just speak specifically to die so and I think we gave additional links earlier in the presentation for the you season CAL States if indeed you're looking at stain in California so I will say this the financial aid process as a whole can be very overwhelmed and intimidating and frustrating at times so most people are in the same boat and I would just say don't be afraid to ask questions don't be afraid to tell mask we're not necessarily going to have all the answers but as I always tell my students you know I'm not afraid to get on the phone and call some people because the challenge to is these things are constantly changing from year to year and end even though as maschera mention I had worked in that field has been a number of years since I have and and things change all the time and so I'm come see us and we will walk through it with you and hope this is smooth the processes as possible for you so you seen those phone numbers and you have questions like mr. Benson said they're real life people there and they may have the best answers for you but basically just transferring your pair tax information from 2019 on to these forms so if they are they pre-populate mr. Benson the on the FAFSA now they have a link basically straight to IRS and it can upload that information so it really does take a lot of the guesswork or the confusion out of the process if you it doesn't always there have been some issues but they've refined I think a lot of those and and so it can be a pretty smooth process okay so anything else in the shower we want to see if there are any questions we can answer for you before we run we will hang out for a while and and if you guys have any questions hang around and we'll do our best to answer some of them or in the right direction for those of you that are dead or you so much for joining us tonight and again we will post this online so you'll be able to get stuff and click on links in an olive hopefully by tomorrow we'll get it up and running for you thanks again you guys and I yeah we will hang tight for anyone that might have questions ichf thank you you know you can unmute yourself so please if you have a question just unmute yourself I have a question like if your family knew him that if you are going to the school and nearby a family relative or something since you or kind of provide room and board time offer will that kind of take place of the left be considered part of the family of the EFC so it won't impact the EFC that UFC is going to simply be based on your financial picture in essence of what we're on your taxes and and all of that where will impact it is and I'm going back to almost the very beginning of this this whole Adventure where they talk about the cost of attendance for the budget that they set up so every college is going to have multiple but one will be at home with cancer family ones going to be on campus and they're very different that way and so that's where they would take it into account is they're going to say hey cost of attendance if you're attending here and let me know on campus it's going to be up here you are at home it's going to be down here they won't it doesn't change the tuition and fees or any of that but the living expenses they will build a bigger budget if you're on campus compared to living at home as a rose your financial aid and your eligibility for what they will give you could change as well so they're going to try to give you more if you live on campus cuz they want to try to meet. That budget Financial need versus if your need is down here so they're going to try to meet that there is especially like 4 year colleges that the schools are requiring it if your call Omar the your parents house is more than I don't know I can't I don't remember it like but yet so they require you bring you to live on campus so what if you have a family member you know an aunt or Uncle to that lives within you know that they could live at their house and not have to pay the dorms and everything like that exceptions if you can a place for your season to live yeah they should they should although I will say some the if you really need to talk to the individual schools now this is also assuming we're in a regular school year and they some schools will be more sticklers about hey if you're a freshman and you're within this radius I don't care if Grandma's right down the street dance right down the street lyrics live on campus at first year or something like that I would say generally speaking schools will give you that flexibility to to appeal any of that and be sure if you're you're able to prove that Aunt Edna lives down the street then you should be good to go it's very good question thank you any others I don't know who else is going she wants to go to a community college have an idea of which ones before she even applies for all of this like you were saying you list a few schools or is that just more if you're going to you know before year it's a good idea yeah you can update it later of the whole process and so we understand and I understand but every student knows where they're going to want to actually go when it comes to thinking clothes she can change that send the information to San Bernardino that's my two cents mr. Benson what would you say financial-aid perspective if you've narrowed it to a handful or whatever send the FAFSA information to all of them and then you have it there but it doesn't necessarily it's sending it to 27 schools or two schools it's not going to impact on what your eligibility will be okay got it and then another question process early as a 4-year School the letter of reward does that happen for a community college or just a four-year in private I mean the private schools Chevrolet open their applications till March April it might be a little later this year everything might be a little bit later screwy right now but generally if Wiki March and so hopefully Unity College they're going to want to go to you guys are exactly right you're going to get that financial aid award simply cuz that the admissions application process is later on but they still will provide you they're actually required on this part of the federal deal they they are required to provide some sort of financial aid award letter detailing their expenses what you've been awarded etcetera but yeah the four-year colleges are going to come earlier just simply cuz the admissions process is earlier got it all right thank you absolutely we're making dinner so we had a soft the video why you should have I know you later okay thank you guys
