Show Transcript
hello Big Bear seniors I just wanted to congratulate you on your last couple of months of high school you're almost finished the purpose of this tutorial is to walk you through the mahele scholarship application process so where we're going to start is the Big Bear High School website bbhs. Bearvalleyusd. Org you're going to look for the seniors Tab and select mihaylo Foundation and then once you're there you're going to hit the apply Now button and that's on the mahele website but you can get there from the high school website is the easiest and once you're here go ahead and read these directions for Success there's some really important information on here you want to complete your application online and you do want to make sure you proofread your application before you send it our way for review it's really really important on this and other things that you're applying for just like you're in class that your work is your best work and so proofreading is really important with the mahele program each student that's awarded a scholarship will only receive one scholarship so unlike the local scholarships where you might receive multiples with a mihaylo scholarships you only receive one being that we've had a lot of challenges you only need to do one letter of recommendation or provide one letter of recommendation to us we suggest you do that right away they decide who you're going to ask and ask for right away to give that person time to write you a quality letter of recommendation it is an important part of our review process so make sure that you do to somebody that you think is going to represent you well when you're going to that person that you're going to ask to do a letter of recommendation go ahead and provide him a brag sheet go ahead and let them know all the things that you've done during high school and all of your successes and accomplishments your any service anything to help them again write you a good quality letter another really really really important thing relatives either by blood or by marriage or not we will not accept those letter of recommendation so please please do not submit a letter of recommendation from a blood relative or a relative that you are related to through marriage in your family it does need to be somebody outside of family make sure you get started on your application right away and you don't have to finish it the same day there is two opportunities to save the application and go back but don't push it to the last minute we do want you to devote the time to it that it deserves so that how you're represented as fast as you can be number 16 if you look on that directions for Success Barbara Belcher is who you will contact you if you have any questions regarding application her email is listed here Barbara Belcher at charter.net but you can also email her at Barbara Belcher at gmail.com so the same as what's listed there on number 16 but instead of Charter botnet you can also use gmail.com Barbara also has given us permission to give you her phone number but she has asked that you don't call her that you text her as high school students you might be up late working on applications and what it would be better to send her a text and that way when she has the time she can get back to you her cell phone number 909-556-2864 so again when you're reaching out to Barber for any questions that you might have and feel free to ask her if you have any questions she's there to answer and help you where she can use those two email addresses Barbara Belcher at charter.net or Barbara Belcher at gmail.com or her cell number please text rather than phone call 909-556-2864 if you don't hear from her within a day please go ahead and reach out to her again it just means that she didn't receive your message so if you don't hear from her just make sure you reach out to her again she does have trouble occasionally with that charter.net email so you might try the Gmail email if you don't get a reply back from her or texting okay after you look at all of these directions that are listed let's go ahead and hit let's go and we're going to start to walk through the application process going to go ahead and fill out the application as you would be so some of these questions are very easy I'm just going to use some sample information personal email so your name that's clear first last name on the email it says cannot be your bvusd email that is very very important because after you're awarded a skull you won't have access to that email address anymore and there are times when you either need to reach out to Barbara or she needs to reach out to you and if you only list that email we won't be able to reach you so make sure that it's your person email not school email so again I'm going to just type in a hypothetical email here just to get us down through the application next yours cell phone number so enter that again there may be a and an occasion where Barbara needs to reach out to you and she does need a valid phone number so especially if you're at school or something like at home number make sure you use your cell number so that she can reach you after your phone number you're going to enter your physical address that is your home address where you actually live okay after you enter your home address your physical address if you do get mailed to that address you can go ahead and click this box if not and that is most of you most of us do have PO Boxes up here it's really important that you do put that PO box number in these fields that way if we need to mail you something the mail will reach you it won't get returned to us so it's really really really important that you do enter that PO box number if you don't get mailed to your actually actual home address okay next field self-explanatory enter one of your parent or Guardian names their email address and that's really only in the in the case that we are not able to reach you you're away at school or something it's just an alternate form of communication for us so that we can reach out to you and make sure that if you are awarded a scholarship we can we can reach out to you okay go on to the next page so this is where you're going to actually start your application I am just going to put the word text in there I'm not going to write an essay but in a well-developed essay please describe your future career goals why you've made this choice and steps to plan your steps you plan to take to achieve you also should include the school that you'll be attending and your chosen major if you have one this is a good place for you to just let us know about you and what your plans are for the future so again watch for typos be real clear and concise it doesn't have to be super long I know it does say it should be three to four paragraphs at least three sentences the main thing is that you just one tell us about you and what what your goals are here and what your plans are for the Future Okay so after you do that you're going to go to the next page and we change the in a little bit this year so if you've had some older siblings or friends or whatnot that have applied previously we try to make the application a little more concise a little less repetitive in the things that you need to tell us about you this year there's 52 scholarships and we've categorized them so the first set of scholarships which you will see here we've called them General scholarships so these scholarships do now not have a lot of specific criteria and so by completing this application which if you look at this last bullet point it says a complete application and creature chart of activities which will get to your letter of recommendation and we're also going to ask you to sign that you have confirmed that your letter of recommendation is not provided by any kind of relative of yours you also need to provide your GPA and a transcript so if all you do are those items along with that a say at the beginning you will automatically be considered for these scholarships on this page you don't have to do anything were there for these now granted if your GPA is below 3.0 then we would not consider you for those scholarships that say your your GPA has to be a 3.0 or better like the John Buster's rotary Bonnie Roberts scholarship so but if you meet all the criteria of all of those will automatically be considered for those scholarships so you don't need to do anything special on those other than havoc sleep application still going on to the next page this is our first actual category of scholarships and we group them by leadership and service so are we going to read this category many of our donors are looking for applicants with strong leadership skills if you consider yourself to be a strong leader committed to service with in Big Bear High School call the community County state or nice briefly describe your strengths in a single paragraph or short essay as an explanation of how you qualify for the following 12 scholarships please also note your leadership involvement on the chart of activities which is located on the application after that the scholarships are listed here so you're also going to on top of leadership if you have completed or participated in community sir Easter Service activities you're going to want to list those tell us about you tell us about your how you would qualify for these leadership service scholarships so if you go a you're going to read each of these scholarships and if you feel like you qualify should be considered for one or more of these scholarships you're going to come to the end of this category and right here the quest it says would you like to apply for the above leadership service-related scholarships so I'm going to say yes I do have I do meet the criteria so I will hit yes and then in doing so box pops up and this is where you're going to write your statement about why you qualify for these particular scholarships so if you're looking at these and you see something in that really makes you stand out amongst your peers this is where you're going to put that so please go ahead and read those scholarships but rather than have to repeat information over and over and over again with each individual one we've categorized it so that you can just tell us all about why you qualify for any or all of these Scholarships in this box here okay so then once you're done there and if you don't feel like you have qualified for these and you'd rather not be considered because you don't qualify you're going to instead hit know the Box goes away and you'll just go on to the next page okay the next scholar steps are all athletic related scholarships so if you're an athlete these would be scholarships that you should be considered for so what I we would like you to do is read through these scholarship and if you feel like you qualify for one or more of these again the same window pops up same boxes would you like to apply for the above athletic scholarships you hate yes and this is where you're going to tell us why you qualify or should be considered for any or all of these scholarships again if there's something in one of these particular scholarships that we should know of you in particular please go ahead and make sure that that is mentioned in this box okay and again if you're not an athlete don't feel like you should be considered for these you're going to hit know the Box goes away and we're going to go to the next section I write our next category is business-related so here are these six Business scholarships again read through them let us know why you should be considered and again if not you can hit no and bypass it but yes please go ahead and tell us how and again I'm going to say yes I do qualify but I'm just going to write a word here so it will let me bypass the section but this is where you're going to tell us specifically why you should be considered for these six scholarships our next section is educate so if you're interested in the field of Education please describe how you qualify for the following three scholarships and again make sure you read through them anything stands out to you that would have I see that you're a good fit for that scholarship it's really really important that you put it in this box down below so then make sure if you are interested in the field of Education please make sure that you fill in this box so that you'll be considered for the three educational related scholarships above all right we're going to continue on now these are our last set of scholarships and they all have specific criteria that you need to further expand on so go ahead and read through them right if you feel like after reading like this first one the Marine Corps League / Veterans of Foreign Wars a Big Bear Valley scholarship it's a $2,000 scholarship is after you read this section you think that that is one that suits you that we feel we would feel that you meet the criteria for you're going to make sure that you click this box when you click this box you'll see when we get down to the bottom of the window opens up and this is where you tell us why and you're qualified for that particular scholarship but don't just worry about doing one let's say you feel that you are qualified for all of these for whatever reason the case may be you go ahead and click them all if you don't click you won't be considered for that scholarship because you won't have the opportunity to tell us why so this set of scholarships is different than the previous ones because they do have more specific Syria that they are looking for so I'm clicking all of them and in doing so there is a box for each one to fill out so on these we are asking any box that you have clicked you actually write something telling us why you're qualified in each of these boxes the reviewers the scholarship committee are not looking for you to State and restate the same thing over and over and over again and each of these boxes anytime you fill out a new box we'd like to know something different about you and something different as to why you feel that you should be considered if you notice on this Marine Corps Veterans of Foreign Wars scholarship there is the option to attach the deed form DD-214 form here so if you noticed here it says preference will be given to children or gray children who can verify their relationship with military campaign service and if that is you you should have access hopefully to this form DD-214 it is option you don't have to attach it but if you have it it would certainly give you priority over other applicants okay so now that we've now I'm going to go up here and actually deselect them all otherwise I'll have to write something okay so I did not select anything on these scholarships so the Box did not open up for any of them to fill out but just so that to reiterate it. going to apply for any of these 18 scholarships you must click on the box that you're applying for so that the window opens up at the very bottom of the scholarships and you can tell us why you meet the criteria for ner all of those specific scholarships so I'm going to write the word test in there just so that the system will let me bypass and go below but if you can see here the Warren Family scholarship is the only one of 18 I applied for and that's why I only that window opened up okay we're going to go to next okay this is the chart of activities I mentioned earlier and this is where your find a list any of the things that you've been involved with as far as class offices clubs community activities community service drama Productions you've had a job employed while you been in high school anything related to music Publications sports sports leadership ASP so if you notice here it's broken down by grades so 9/10 11th and 12th what you do to list any of these things that you've been involved in is click this arrow and those same categories will pop up so let's say you were freshman class president you're going to hit class office and involvement you're going to stay a freshman class president okay but don't let that stop you there we want everything that you can think of that you've been involved in so in order to add another category in your 9th grade year you're going to hit this plus and another set of boxes open up come to the arrow and let's say that you were on a sports team so let's say you were on the JV basketball team that is where you're going to enter just keep going and entering as many boxes as you have items for so this is a good opportunity for you to brag about all that you've done while you been in high school once you're done I can go ahead and hit this minus sign if I'm done there in 9th grade you'll continue on 10th grade 11th grade 12th grade anything that's related to any of these categories you want to make sure you left so that we can see let's say you play Das pring Sport and a fall sport you'll go ahead and you'll add another box you'll select Sports again and let's say you were on the JV let's just a softball team since I said my name was Susie okay so that's where you would list that as well so fill that out as much as you and if you find something that didn't really meet a category above hobby activity interest that you didn't mention above please make sure that you listed here for us so that we make sure that we see that okay and then once you fill those out here's your future plan section so what school you'll be attending next year so let's just say okay what will you be majoring in if you're unsure you can put undecided but if you are let's say that you are going to major in math let's go ahead and put me out there and then your future career goal you want to be a math teacher and that's where you would put that okay and if you're undecided you may put that as well just give us a little bit of information of where you're where you're at right now what's your considering and what what you think you might be interested in going into again here's another box that you can fill in anything that might support your application so if you don't know what your ultimate career goal is and rather and there's not enough room to put it here go ahead and let us know what interest you have and what things you enjoy doing and what you think you might like to do in the future anything that again might help your application okay let's go to next okay letters of recommendation again I'm going to say it again because we've had that trouble in the past Yuma do not use a relative whether they're related to you by blood or by marriage so let's say your brother's wife wants to write you a letter of recommendation she's not your blood relative but she is still on I live by my marriage so anybody you would consider to be a relative should not be writing a letter of recommendation for you so here we've listed you may choose an employer a neighbor or someone from your church or sir organization coach or trainer and instructor or another bvusd employ a teacher staff member those are all good sources for your letter of recommendation so you're going to put their name here once you've asked them and they've agreed to do one for you you will go ahead and put their name whatever that name is well let's put them and then here is once you have that letter of recommendation you can attach either a Word document or a PDF so once you have that saved you're going to go ahead and choose the file here I just have a sample letter of recommendation it doesn't actually have anything in it but just so you can see that I'm uploading something you're going to want to make sure it's there the system actually will not let you bypass and tell you how that attached so even if you're just applying for those General scholarships you do need to have one letter of recommendation and consider that carefully who that person will be like I said earlier okay transcript so please upload your transcript here on your transcript you'll see your weighted GPA and class rank under the GPA summary section so you are going to write those in there but we also do copy of your transcript so you'll want to say that to your computer once you get that from the school and you're going to go ahead and attach it okay and then let us know what your GPA is 4.0 and I'm going to put that I'm number one in my class okay that boat all of that information will be on your transcript you should be able to find it there okay and then again just to make sure that you you understand that letter of recommendation needs to be unrelated to you or asking you to sign that you're ignoring that think I said my name was Susie Smith you're acknowledging the fact that you understand that this letter is coming from somebody on related I didn't mention it before but on each page there is a save and continue enter button when you push that button which I believe I can do here and go back when I'm done it's going to give you this link so that you can come back to your application you don't have to start over and rather than have to save that link you can go ahead and enter your email address here send the link it'll email it to you and that way when you're ready to go back to your application you can pick up where you left off but that's a really important YouTube information because you don't have to do it all in one step alright so we'll go here to next and let's see my letter of recommendation didn't get attached so see it would not let me bypass that probably because I chose that save for later I think if you select that you may have reattach your attachments if you do go out and then back in as you see the transcript did not save either so no problem to go back out but you'd we'll just have to reattach those items if you do really if you do it at them initially but then save your application for later okay so I think I'm ready to move on to next okay and then here we go this is a a recap of everything I've entered so you can see everything that we've put in if after looking at this it all looks correct you're going to head go ahead and hit submit application if you're looking at something that doesn't look right above you can always hit previous and go back to the page where that incorrect item is or you read something that doesn't fight sound right when you're reviewing just go ahead and hit previous you'll just take you back a page if you need to keep going you can hit previous until you get to where you need to be system is really user-friendly so you shouldn't have any trouble with it I'm going to go ahead and hit next and I'm already so I'm going to hit submit application okay you're going to want to make sure that you see that submitted and once you're done there it is out of your hands and into the scholarship committees and so we wish you the best again I have any questions reach out to Barbara voucher at Barbara voucher at charter.net Barbara voucher at gmail.com or text Barbara at 90955 6 2864 now if you are texting or emailing her at night time please make sure you give her till the morning to respond and again if you don't hear from her within one day please go ahead and try again maybe try the other email address or text her phone number again the only reason she would not reply back to you as if she didn't get your message to begin with good luck best wishes and I have a great rest of your senior year take care
